How to Make Your Own Mask for COVID

First Off…How The Inspiration Hit to Make a COVID Mask

My mom and I both had Friday off due to the July 4th weekend. While I was creating posts on my blog all day, my mom (let’s call her Momma J) decided to take on a fun task. She started making a mask for COVID!

Now, to others, this might sound perfectly normal, but my mom typically doesn’t engage in sporadic arts and crafts activities like this. And let me tell ya–the excitement on her face after successfully creating her mask was hilarious and so cute! It turned out to be a great (and productive) Friday afternoon activity.

Since this is extremely relevant to what’s happening in life with COVID right now (I’m a little late to the game, woops), I thought I’d share the details.

If you’re looking to find an easy and fun way to create a face mask at home, keep reading!

How to Get This Project Started and Make Your Own Mask

You can start by purchasing this super easy to use kit at Walmart. It comes with almost all of the materials you need.

Here is the exact face mask kit she used:

And the best part– It’s only $10 and you can make 4 masks from it!

What the kit comes with:

  • Pre-cut cotton fabrics
  • Filter material
  • Elastic
  • Instructions
  • YouTubeTutorial

What you need:

  • A sewing machine
  • Pipe cleaners or a bread tie
  • WiFi or data to watch the YouTube Video instructions

Creating the mask:

It was super easy to create using the YouTube Instructions. And no offense to Momma J but technology is not her strong suit. If she was able to make the mask using the YouTube Tutorial, you should be able to, too! (Sorry Mom!)

TIPS FROM MOMMA J: Don’t forget the pipe cleaners or bread tie’s, as it doesn’t come with the kit! If you’re having trouble deciding between the two, she recommends getting bread tie’s because it makes it easier to adjust the part above your nose!

What the Final Mask Looked Like

Here are the after pics of Momma J’s face mask. You can expand the fabric like a typical face mask to fit accordingly.

I tested it out myself and it fit perfectly! Honestly, if she told me she bought the mask from Walmart, I would have believed her!

After my enthusiastic applaud to her successfully making the mask, she decided to give it to me and make another for herself (so selfless). As I currently only have the masks they’ve been giving out in stores, I’m super excited to have my own comfortable and fitted mask! Thanks Momma J!
