Motivational Monday #5: Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it

Life is 10% what happens to you

Each day of our lives, people, places, and events come into play. People influence our lives in one way or another. Obstacles block our way and things that you would have never expected to happen occur. Places and events give us new ways of thinking and inspire you.

Life is 90% how you respond to it

As each event occurs, we make conscious and subconscious decisions on how we chose to push forward. With every action that takes place in our lives, we ultimately decide how we want to be influenced or affected by it.

Life is 10% what happens to you but 90% how you respond to it

This is readily apparent in what we see and know. Startups start with an idea, painters get inspired by events and people, doctors and scientists use events, people, and multiple experiments to create solutions, and CEO’s get to the top by working hard, knowing the right people, and being driven and relentless.

It’s in those little moments where we decide what we want to do with the people we meet, the information we are given, the sights we see, and the experiences we have.

How to control that 90%

When you think of a new idea, will you get inspired by it, or will you let it disappear and forget about it?

When you meet someone important, will you stay connected and learn from them, or will you let them go?

When you get a small opportunity at work, will you work hard and let that open the door for you or will you be too afraid to take advantage of it?

When you go through obstacles, will you push forward and get through it, or will you let failure define you?

Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it.

From now on, let every action, every event, every person, and every experience guide you forward.

With every action that happens to you, deliberately stop and think–What did I just experience? How will I act as a result of what just happened? And how I will I choose to live my life going forward because of it?

Bottom Line

Your attitude matters.

What you choose to do as a result of every single situation you encounter will fundamentally change your life, in one way or another.

So how are you going to react?

You make choices everyday, but you are in charge of those choices, and you are in control of your life.

Although you can’t control everything that happens to you, you can control how you react and push forward.
