7 Tips for Moving to a New Apartment:

    1) Plan Early

It’s best to plan early so that you’re all set when it comes to actually moving! Here are some things you’ll have more flexibility to do if you plan early:

    • Explore many apartments and areas that you want to live in
    • Understand the financial obligations to each (security deposit, first months rent, application fees)
    • Find a subletter for your apartment if you’re breaking your lease

    2) Make a moving budget and stick to it

Creating a budget for moving is the best way to ensure you’re not overspending! Estimate the cost of furniture and labor, utilities, fees involved, and the actual moving expenses you’ll have.

    3) Reach out to current and new landlord

Don’t forget to reach out to your landlord! You might have to submit a letter to your old landlord resigning from the apartment. Make sure your new landlord knows when you’re moving in so that you can sign any forms ahead of time.

    4) Decide On Moving Options

There are a few options you have here!

    • Hire a mover to completely handle your move: This option is by far the easiest but definitely the most expensive!
    • Pack your furniture yourself but have the movers move it: This could take away the driving aspect and leave you to pack your own items for your move. Pickup and delivery would be hassle free.
    • Self move: Taking this option is the cheapest but hardest route! You’ll have to pack your items, rent a U haul or a van to move, and completely move the entirety of your items. If you choose this option, I would definitely phone a few friends!

    5) Discontinue Services

Don’t forget to cancel any old services you might have, such as electricity, internet, and tv providers. If you plan on keeping these services in your new apartment, you can call and ask to switch them to your new address!

    6) Schedule Furniture Delivery

If you plan on ordering new furniture, plan your delivery so that it gets there the day you arrive or a little earlier! There’s nothing worse than being ready to unpack but not having the means to do so.

    7) Set Up Your Utilities

Don’t forget to notify your electricity and internet provider of your move in date! Moving in would be difficult without AC and light!

    8) Get An Extra Set of Keys Made

Prevent yourself from crying later….get an extra set of your new keys made soon after you move! A spare key always comes in handy.

    9) Change Your Address

After moving in, change your mailing address so that you get your mail. You can also take this time to update your billing address on any apps you use!
